SABALENKA KNOCKED OUT OF CHINA OPEN IN MAJOR UPSET

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has been knocked out of the China Open after suffering a straight sets defeat to 20 year old Czech player Nikola Bartunkova. Bartunkova, ranked No. 34 in the world, defeated the four time Grand Slam champion 6–4, 6–3 in Beijing on Sunday. The match lasted one hour and 35 minutes, with Bartunkova saving all five break points she faced and breaking Sabalenka three times. Sabalenka’s exit means the women’s tournament has now lost both of its top two seeds after world No. 1 Elena Rybakina was eliminated on Saturday.
Aryna Sabalenka has suffered a major upset at the China Open after 20 year old Czech player Nikola Bartunkova defeated the world No. 2 in straight sets.
Bartunkova produced one of the biggest victories of her career with a 6–4, 6–3 win in Sunday’s third round.
The match lasted one hour and 35 minutes.
BARTUNKOVA STRIKES EARLY
Bartunkova immediately placed Sabalenka under pressure by breaking serve in the opening game.
Sabalenka had opportunities to respond but was unable to convert five break points in the sixth game of the first set.
Bartunkova remained composed under pressure and protected her advantage to take the opening set 6–4.
SABALENKA UNABLE TO TURN MATCH AROUND
The Belarusian entered the second set needing a response but continued to struggle against Bartunkova’s aggressive and disciplined play.
Bartunkova broke again as Sabalenka became increasingly frustrated.
The Czech player eventually closed out the second set 6–3 on her first match point.
BARTUNKOVA SAVED EVERY BREAK POINT
One of the decisive statistics from the match was Bartunkova’s performance under pressure.
She saved all five break points she faced.
Sabalenka, by comparison, was unable to break her opponent’s serve during the match.
Bartunkova converted three of her eight break opportunities.
She also won a high percentage of points behind her first serve.
“I FOCUSED ON MYSELF”
Bartunkova said her priority was remaining calm against one of the biggest names in women’s tennis.
She praised Sabalenka as a great player and said she was delighted to secure the victory.
The result represents another major step forward for the young Czech player, who has climbed rapidly in the rankings.
SABALENKA'S BEIJING CAMPAIGN ENDS EARLY
Sabalenka entered the China Open as the second seed.
She had opened her tournament with a comfortable victory over Renata Zarazua but was unable to build on that performance.
Her defeat continues a difficult second half of the season.
Sabalenka won the Indian Wells and Miami titles earlier in 2026 but has not lifted another trophy since completing that Sunshine Double.
GRAND SLAM SEASON ENDED WITHOUT TITLE
Sabalenka reached the U.S. Open final last month but was defeated by Elena Rybakina.
That result ensured she would finish the season without winning a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2022.
Rybakina subsequently replaced Sabalenka as world No. 1.
RYBAKINA ALSO OUT
The China Open women’s draw has now lost both of its top two seeds.
Rybakina was eliminated on Saturday by Alina Charaeva.
The newly crowned world No. 1 lost 3–6, 6–4, 6–3 in another major upset.
Her defeat came in her first match since winning the U.S. Open.
TWO BIGGEST SEEDS GONE IN OPENING WEEK
The early departures of Rybakina and Sabalenka have dramatically opened up the women’s draw.
Both entered Beijing among the leading contenders for the title.
Instead, neither has reached the second week of the tournament.
That creates an opportunity for lower ranked and younger players to make deeper runs.
BARTUNKOVA NOW FACES SINJA KRAUS
Bartunkova will next face Austrian player Sinja Kraus in the round of 16.
Kraus advanced after defeating Dayana Yastremska 6–1, 6–4.
Bartunkova will enter that match with significant momentum after defeating one of the most successful players on the women’s tour.
BARTUNKOVA CONTINUES RAPID RISE
At 20, Bartunkova is already ranked No. 34 in the world.
Her performance against Sabalenka showed both composure and tactical discipline.
She served four aces and consistently attacked Sabalenka’s first serve.
The victory is likely to further strengthen her reputation as one of the emerging players on the WTA Tour.
SABALENKA'S CHINA OPEN RECORD REMAINS FRUSTRATING
Despite her success elsewhere, Sabalenka has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals at the China Open.
Sunday’s defeat extends that record.
The four time Grand Slam champion will now turn her attention to the remaining events of the season.
WHAT IS CONFIRMED
Nikola Bartunkova defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6–4, 6–3.
The match lasted one hour and 35 minutes.
Bartunkova is 20 years old and ranked No. 34.
Sabalenka entered the tournament as the second seed and world No. 2.
World No. 1 Elena Rybakina was also eliminated earlier in the tournament.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Bartunkova advances to face Sinja Kraus in the round of 16.
Sabalenka exits Beijing earlier than expected and will now regroup ahead of her remaining tournaments.
With the top two seeds gone, the China Open women’s title race has become significantly more open.
