INEC SOUNDS ALARM OVER DEEPFAKES AND AI FAKE NEWS AS NIGERIA HEADS INTO 2027 ELECTION
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan has warned that deepfakes, fabricated audio, synthetic videos and coordinated AI driven disinformation could threaten confidence in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. INEC has established a specialized AI unit to monitor digital threats and strengthen election administration, but says critical decisions involving accreditation, candidate qualification, collation and election results will remain under human and legal oversight. The Commission is also urging security agencies to remain professional and neutral as preparations intensify.
