FOURTEEN MINERS KILLED AND SEVEN INJURED AFTER UNLICENSED GOLD MINE COLLAPSES IN COLOMBIA
Fourteen miners have been killed and seven injured after an unlicensed open-pit gold mine collapsed in the rural Chambero area of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé in Colombia’s Nariño department. The disaster triggered a difficult rescue operation in a remote rainforest region that can mainly be reached by boat or small aircraft and where armed groups operate. Nariño Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar said search operations had concluded and called for faster formalisation of informal miners to improve safety. The accident follows another mining disaster in Policarpa in August that killed 13 people, taking the combined toll from the two Nariño collapses to 27 in less than three months.
