33 DIE IN NSCDC CUSTODY AS FEDERAL PANEL EXPOSES SUFFOCATION, CHILD DETAINEES AND ALLEGED COVER-UP
A Federal Government investigative panel has confirmed that 33 detainees, including 14 minors, died in NSCDC custody in Minna, Niger State, after being held in an overcrowded cell with inadequate ventilation, extreme heat and little or no drinking water. The committee blamed environmental asphyxia, dehydration and custodial negligence and rejected an earlier disease-outbreak explanation. It recommended dismissals and prosecutions where appropriate, ₦1.4 billion in compensation, scholarships for victims’ children and support for survivors. A fresh October 31 disclosure also revealed that one victim, 25-year-old Emmanuel Emeka, had allegedly been detained unlawfully over a private debt rather than illegal mining.
