LULA WINS BRAZIL ELECTION, SECURES HISTORIC FOURTH TERM AFTER DRAMATIC RUNOFF COMEBACK
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the October 25 presidential runoff, winning approximately 51.8% of valid votes against Bolsonaro’s 48.2% and securing an unprecedented fourth non-consecutive term. Lula becomes the first Brazilian presidential candidate in the country’s modern democratic era to finish second in the first round and then win the runoff. Bolsonaro has refused to concede and says he will challenge the result in court, while Lula now faces a strongly conservative Congress, fiscal pressures, public-security concerns and a deeply divided electorate as he prepares for another four-year mandate.
