The total deaths during the The Burning Man Festival in Nevada has risen to three, tripling the usual amount of deaths at the festival.
A third death has been confirmed at The Burning Man Festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, which ran from 30 August to 1 September.
The South African previously reported that there were two deaths at this year’s Burning Man Festival held at Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, marking what officials describe as an unusually high toll for the 40th-anniversary event. Now the death toll has risen to three.
The first death was reported by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office: a man in his mid-50s, later identified as Sampson Tshombe, was found on a street at the festival on Thursday 3 September, and emergency personnel performed CPR until a certified doctor pronounced him deceased.
Two days later, on 5 September, 60-year-old Craig Mann was found deceased in his trailer, which he was sharing with his partner, according to the sheriff’s office.
Third Burning Man death confirmed, marking an unusually high toll for the annual festival. The third and most recently identified victim is Armando Ramirez, a 51-year-old from Truckee, California. According to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, Ramirez died while being taken to a hospital in Reno, roughly 190 kilometres south of the festival, and was pronounced dead in the ambulance in the early hours of Friday.
A Burning Man Project spokesperson said Ramirez experienced a “serious medical emergency” in Black Rock City on Friday morning and immediately received on-site lifesaving measures before being transported toward Reno.
The medical examiner’s office has stated that Ramirez’s cause and manner of death remain pending further testing, and has said there is no concern of foul play in his death. The same applies to Mann and Tshombe, whose cases will undergo autopsies and toxicology screenings, with results expected in six to eight weeks.
Pershing County Sheriff and coroner Jerry Allen noted the unusual toll, pointing out that the festival typically averages one death a year, but this year saw two deaths within the festival grounds itself plus a third fatality during transit to hospital.
Burning Man has organizers issued statements of condolence following each death, and the festival — now in its fifth decade — has faced fatalities in previous years too, though rarely three within a single event.
