The foldable handset, rumoured to be called the iPhone Duo, is expected to headline a major Apple launch event beginning at 19:00 (SA time).
Apple is expected to unveil its first-ever foldable iPhone later on Wednesday, with the highly anticipated device reportedly carrying a starting price of around $2 000 (R32 000).
The foldable handset, rumoured to be called the iPhone Duo, is expected to headline a major Apple launch event beginning at 19:00 (SA time).
The company is also expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, updated Apple Watch models and new AirPods.
The launch will also mark the first major Apple keynote for John Ternus, who became the company’s chief executive on 1 September, succeeding longtime CEO Tim Cook.
Cook has moved into the role of executive chairman.
Ternus has already hinted at the significance of the event, telling Apple employees in a memo that the company had a “huge launch” coming that would be “phenomenal”.
The pressure will be high as Ternus takes charge of one of the technology industry’s most closely watched product launches.
Reports suggest the entry-level foldable iPhone will feature 256GB of storage, with higher-capacity versions potentially costing around $3 000 (R48 000).
Apple is reportedly attempting to limit the impact of increased component costs, including those associated with a global memory shortage, in order to keep the starting price close to the $2 000 mark.
The device is expected to feature a shorter, wider design, broadly similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold range.
Under the hood, reports indicate that Apple will use its new C2 modem alongside the A20 Pro chip.
The foldable is also expected to offer enhanced multitasking features, including side-by-side applications and an iPad-style approach to running multiple apps.
That could give Apple’s first foldable a stronger productivity focus, rather than relying solely on its novelty folding display.
Apple has not yet confirmed a South African launch date or local price for the foldable iPhone.
Some South African retailers have listed the device as “coming soon”, but without pricing information.
This suggests local customers may have to wait until after the international launch before the new iPhone becomes officially available in South Africa.
For Apple, however, Wednesday’s event represents more than another iPhone launch.
It is the beginning of a new chapter under Ternus – and potentially the company’s biggest step into the foldable smartphone market yet.
