KANO — The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, who was attacked at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area.

Police said Danshagamu was attacked by unidentified assailants who allegedly forced their way into his home late on Monday night and assaulted him with sharp objects.

The arrests followed an intelligence driven operation involving officers from the Kumbotso Police Division, tactical units and members of the local community.

Kano Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the two suspects remain in custody and are being interrogated as investigators work to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.

Police are also searching for other individuals who may have been involved.

Police respond to late night attack

According to the police account, the command received a distress call at about 11.30pm from the commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group reporting that unknown assailants had entered Danshagamu's residence.

Officers from the Kumbotso Police Division were deployed to the scene.

Danshagamu was taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, where a doctor confirmed him dead on arrival.

Police subsequently opened an investigation and began intelligence gathering operations that resulted in the arrest of two suspects.

“The suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation. The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend any other persons who may be connected to the crime,” police said.

Statements are being obtained from people considered relevant to the investigation, while forensic procedures are also underway.

Police have not publicly disclosed the identities of the two suspects.

No charges have yet been announced.

Motive remains under investigation

Danshagamu was known in Kano for his political commentary, and his death has generated concern among political figures and rights organisations.

However, authorities have not established that his political activities or opinions were the motive for the attack.

Police say investigators are working to determine why he was killed and whether additional individuals were involved.

The two people arrested remain suspects and are presumed innocent unless convicted by a court.

The command said they would be charged following the conclusion of the investigation if sufficient evidence supports prosecution.

Kano Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori expressed concern over the killing and offered condolences to Danshagamu's family.

“The Kano State Police Command will not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property. We assure the good people of Kano that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” Bakori said.

Kwankwaso calls for investigation

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso condemned the killing and called for a comprehensive investigation.

Kwankwaso said Danshagamu was found in a pool of blood at his residence and described the incident as a horrific attack.

He urged the Kano State Government and security authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The incident has also drawn condemnation from political groups in the state.

Husaini Mai Riga, Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, described Danshagamu's death as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

He raised concerns about its implications for public safety, freedom of expression and democratic participation.

Amnesty International condemns killing

Amnesty International Nigeria has also called for a thorough investigation.

The organisation stressed the importance of protecting people who publicly express critical or controversial political views.

“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” Amnesty International said.

The organisation's intervention has added to calls for authorities to establish whether Danshagamu's public commentary had any connection to the attack.

At present, however, police have not announced evidence establishing such a link.

Security increased in Gaida

Police said additional patrols and intelligence gathering operations have been deployed in Gaida and surrounding communities following the killing.

The measures are intended to maintain public order and prevent further violence while the investigation continues.

The command also praised the Gaida Vigilante Group for quickly alerting officers about the attack, describing the response as an example of the importance of cooperation between communities and law enforcement.

Residents have been encouraged to provide credible information that could assist investigators.

With two suspects now in custody, police say the investigation remains focused on determining the full circumstances surrounding Danshagamu's death, identifying any additional people involved and establishing a motive.

Until investigators establish otherwise, authorities have not classified the killing as politically motivated.
