More than 7,000 delegates of the opposition New Patriotic Party are gathering at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi today, Saturday, October 3, to elect the party’s national officers.
The elections mark one of the most important stages of the NPP’s internal reorganization ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general election.
Current party figures indicate that 7,163 delegates are eligible to participate.
The Electoral Commission is supervising the voting, while the NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee is overseeing the party’s internal arrangements.
Forty six candidates remain on the final ballot.
31 VOTING CENTERS ESTABLISHED
The NPP has created 31 voting centers inside the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in an effort to prevent the process from continuing late into the night.
Twenty one centers will handle the elections for National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser and National Treasurer.
The remaining 10 centers will be used for the party’s wing elections.
Five centers will handle the National Youth Organiser contest.
Three will be used for the National Women’s Organiser election.
Two will handle the National Nasara Organiser contest.
Party officials say no more than 400 delegates will be assigned to any individual voting center.
ELECTORAL COMMISSION SUPERVISING VOTE
The Electoral Commission says electoral materials have been prepared and deployed to the Ashanti Region.
EC officials will manage voting at all 31 centers.
Candidates are also permitted to have accredited agents present to observe the process.
The party, Electoral Commission and Ghana Police Service previously conducted a simulation exercise at the stadium to test voting procedures and identify possible operational problems before election day.
DELEGATES TO HANDLE PARTY BUSINESS BEFORE VOTING
The conference is not limited to elections.
Delegates are also expected to consider proposed changes to portions of the NPP constitution.
Among the proposals is a review of how the party defines its leader.
Another concerns the structure and election of Vice Chairpersons.
Other proposals involve Deputy Communications Officers and the status of the party’s IT Officer.
Voting is expected to begin after the constitutional and administrative business is completed.
NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON RACE HAS FOUR CANDIDATES
Four candidates are contesting the National Chairperson position.
They are John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko and Boakye Agyarko.
Boadu previously served as NPP General Secretary.
Afoko is a former National Chairman.
Agyarko previously served as Energy Minister.
Crabbe has also held senior positions within the party.
Delegates will determine who takes over one of the most influential organizational positions in the NPP.
THIRTEEN SEEK VICE CHAIRPERSON POSITIONS
The Vice Chairperson contest has the largest field.
Thirteen candidates are seeking the positions.
Under the existing arrangement, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes will become First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons.
The candidates include Mustapha Abdul Hamid, Kojo Fosu Boadu, George Kwabena Abankwah Yeboah, Richard Ahiagbah, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, Richard Oti Aboagye, Abena Pokua Boaitey Amoah, Yaa Amponsah Frimpong, Henry Nana Boakye, Horma Akesie Miezah, Samuel Pyne, Nana Akomea and Bright Esselfie Kumi.
JUSTIN FRIMPONG KODUA SEEKS ANOTHER TERM
Incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua is seeking another term.
He faces Sylvester Tetteh, Eugene Boakye Antwi and Dr Charles Dwamena.
The General Secretary is one of the party’s most important administrative officers and plays a major role in coordinating national structures, election preparation and internal communication.
FOUR CONTEST NATIONAL TREASURER POSITION
Four candidates are seeking the National Treasurer position.
They are Hajia Ruka Ahmed, Alfred Kojo Thompson, Tahiru Issahaku Moomin and Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah.
The office is responsible for major aspects of the party’s financial administration.
SEVEN REMAIN IN NATIONAL ORGANISER RACE
Seven candidates remain in the National Organiser contest following the withdrawal of Salam Mustapha.
They are Kwame Prempeh, Daniel Agyenim Boateng, Archibald Gamor Korletey, Nana Kwadjo Agyei Yeboah, Ali Maiga Halidu, Emmanuel Korsi Bodja and Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover.
The organiser plays a central role in coordinating party activity across constituencies and regions.

Six candidates are contesting the National Youth Organiser position.
They are Alfred Kumi Ababio, Vera Oye Bram Larbi, Michael Osei Boateng, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, Clement Opoku Gyamfi and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah.
About 2,700 delegates are expected to participate in the youth contest under the party’s eligibility rules.
WOMEN’S ORGANISER IS A TWO WAY CONTEST
The National Women’s Organiser race is between Hajia Safia Mohammed and Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Perpetual Ekua Lomokie Akwada had earlier obtained nomination forms but did not complete the filing process.
The winner will oversee the party’s women’s wing at the national level.
FIVE CONTEST NASARA ORGANISER POSITION
Five candidates are seeking the National Nasara Organiser position.
They are Mohammed Ali Suraj, Issaka Muazo Kunata, Awal Mohammed, Alhaji Salim Bamba and Razak Tahiru Maiga.
The Nasara wing traditionally coordinates the party’s engagement with Muslim communities and related constituencies.
DENNIS MIRACLES ABOAGYE UNOPPOSED
Dennis Miracles Aboagye is the sole candidate for National Communications Director.
His position became uncontested after Evans Kodom withdrew before nominations closed.
Aboagye is therefore expected to assume the position subject to the party’s formal election and confirmation process.
HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE AT BABA YARA
Security around Baba Yara Sports Stadium is substantial.
NPP Organisation Committee Chairperson Anthony Abayifaa Karbo says between 3,000 and 4,000 police personnel have been deployed in Kumasi for the conference.
Their responsibilities include securing the stadium, managing traffic and protecting hostels and hotels where delegates and guests are staying.
Police have also positioned officers around key access points.
ROAD CLOSURES AND TRAFFIC DIVERSIONS IN PLACE
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has introduced temporary traffic restrictions around the stadium.
Affected routes include parts of the roads around Bridginia Traffic Lights, Carvery Methodist Church, Unity Oil Fuel Station and T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School.
Police have also designated parking areas for delegates, party executives, Members of Parliament, former MPs and other accredited participants.
Unauthorized vehicles may be towed.
DELEGATES MUST IDENTIFY THEMSELVES BEFORE VOTING
Delegates will be required to provide identification before receiving ballots.
Accepted identification includes the NPP membership card, Ghana Card or voter identification card.
The Electoral Commission has also warned against delegates photographing their marked ballots.
Officials have also cautioned against attempting to direct another delegate on how to vote.
ELECTION FOLLOWS MONTHS OF INTERNAL REORGANIZATION
The national election comes after a series of lower level internal contests.
The NPP has already completed elections at polling station, electoral area, constituency and regional levels.
Today’s conference completes the national stage of that process.
The officers selected in Kumasi will work with those structures over the coming years.
PARTY IS PREPARING FOR 2028
The NPP is currently in opposition following Ghana’s 2024 general election.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was selected as the party’s 2028 presidential flagbearer during its presidential primary in January 2026.
The new national officers will therefore work alongside the party’s flagbearer and regional structures as the NPP develops its organization and campaign plans for the next election.
Their responsibilities will include fundraising, grassroots organization, communications, election operations and internal administration.
INTERNAL ELECTION WILL NOT DETERMINE 2028 NATIONAL OUTCOME
The national executive vote is important to the party’s organization but does not determine the outcome of Ghana’s 2028 general election.
Today’s results will determine who manages the NPP’s national structures.
The broader electoral contest will eventually be decided by Ghanaian voters in the general election.
DELEGATE FIGURES HAVE VARIED SLIGHTLY IN DIFFERENT REPORTS
Different reports ahead of the conference have cited delegate totals ranging from about 7,100 to 7,163.
The most detailed current breakdown published ahead of voting gives a total of 7,163 delegates.
Ashanti Region has the largest delegation with more than 1,100 participants.
Greater Accra and Eastern Region also have substantial delegations.
VOTING CENTERS DESIGNED TO SPEED UP COUNTING
The use of 31 separate voting centers is intended to reduce queues and allow counting to proceed more quickly.
Each center will have Electoral Commission officials and accredited candidate representatives.
Once voting closes, ballots will be counted under EC supervision.
Results from the various centers will then be consolidated.
CANDIDATES’ AGENTS WILL OBSERVE PROCESS
Candidate agents will be allowed at the voting centers.
Their role includes observing voting and counting procedures.
This provides candidates with direct representation during the process and allows concerns to be raised through the appropriate channels.
SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS WILL REMAIN IN PLACE THROUGHOUT DAY
Police are expected to remain deployed through voting and counting.
Traffic restrictions are also likely to remain in effect until the conference ends.
Delegates and motorists traveling around the stadium have been advised to follow police directions.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Once voting is completed, the Electoral Commission will supervise the counting and declaration of results.
The elected officers will form the core of the NPP’s national leadership during the next stage of its reorganization.
They will be responsible for working with the party’s flagbearer, MPs, regional executives, constituency officers and grassroots supporters.
For now, attention remains on Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Thousands of delegates are gathering.
Forty six candidates remain on the ballot.
Thirty one voting centers are in place.
And by the end of the exercise, the NPP is expected to have a new national executive team that will manage the party through a major part of the road toward Ghana’s 2028 general election.
